JAMB & CAPS Guide
JAMB is the national admissions clearing body for Nigerian tertiary institutions, while each institution still sets programme and screening conditions within the national rules. This hub is designed to help applicants keep those two layers separate: what JAMB requires nationally and what YABATECH, UNILAG, LASU, LASUSTECH, LASUED or another institution requires for a specific course.
2026 national minimum admission scores
JAMB’s current 2026 policy information lists a minimum tolerable admission score of 150 for universities and colleges of nursing, and 100 for polytechnics, monotechnics, colleges of agriculture, colleges of education and Innovation Enterprise Institutions. These are national minimums, not automatic cut-off marks for every school or course. An institution may use a higher score.
Why CAPS matters
JAMB describes the Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS) as the system used to automate and coordinate admissions into tertiary institutions. For applicants, the practical lesson is to avoid treating an institution screening result, an unofficial list or a message from an agent as the final admission record. Follow the institution’s own process and the applicable JAMB admission steps together.
Use the national benchmark correctly
A candidate with 150 has met the national university floor stated by JAMB for 2026, but that does not mean the candidate meets UNILAG, LASU or another university’s own screening threshold, nor does it prove eligibility for a chosen course. Course subject combinations, O’Level results, first-choice rules, screening scores and capacity can all matter. LAG Institutes therefore stores institution-route thresholds separately from the JAMB national benchmark.
Compare the right admission layer
When students compare institutions, several different numbers can appear on the same day: JAMB’s national minimum, an institution screening threshold, a department or course requirement and an aggregate score used later in selection. They answer different questions. The national minimum tells you the lowest benchmark JAMB permits for that institution type; the institution threshold tells you whether you can enter that school’s current screening route; course requirements determine whether the subjects and qualifications match the programme; final selection can still depend on capacity and the institution’s approved admission process.
For that reason, LAG Institutes does not describe a single number as “the cut-off mark” unless the official source itself clearly defines what the number applies to. A score that is correct for a university screening exercise should not be reused for a polytechnic HND route or for another academic session.
UTME, Direct Entry and other routes are not the same
UTME and Direct Entry applicants should pay close attention to the JAMB requirements that apply to their route, but not every programme on an institution website is processed in exactly the same way. HND, part-time, distance-learning, foundation, diploma, certificate and postgraduate routes can have their own application systems and qualification rules. Always identify the route first, then follow the official steps for that route rather than copying instructions from a full-time undergraduate notice.
This distinction also matters inside the Admission Finder. The Finder can narrow possible routes from the verified information stored on LAG Institutes, but it does not convert a JAMB benchmark into a promise of eligibility for a different route.
A safer way to check admission status
Start with the institution’s official portal or notice for the stage you are currently in, then use the applicable JAMB service for the formal admission process. If an institution portal and JAMB do not appear to update at exactly the same time, do not pay a third party to “push” or “unlock” your admission. Recheck the official instructions, confirm that any required result upload or acceptance action has been completed, and preserve receipts or confirmation records from legitimate transactions.
Older admission pages can remain online after a new cycle starts, so always look at the academic session and verification date. LAG Institutes displays a last-verified date for this reason and keeps monitored source changes separate from older guides.
Keep your admission account secure
Use official JAMB and institution services for admission status and account actions. Do not send passwords, profile codes, PINs or other credentials through LAG Institutes or to a person claiming to have a private route into CAPS. Application assistance should help you understand or complete a legitimate process; it should never depend on surrendering control of your admission account.
