Mathematics Education at UNILAG
Mathematics Education is a quantitative course, so applicants should pay close attention to Mathematics, Physics and any additional science or computing subject named by UNILAG. A result that looks strong overall can still be unsuitable if the required subject combination is missing.
What you need before you apply
This page is a course-specific requirement guide, not an admission guarantee. It separates the stable academic requirement from changing items such as screening dates, current cut-off scores and whether an application portal is open.
O’Level requirement
Five O'Level credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Physics and any two of Chemistry, Biology, Agricultural Science, Further Mathematics or Computer Studies/Data Processing.
Read that requirement literally. A candidate can have five or more credits and still be ineligible if one compulsory subject is missing or if the result combination falls outside the subjects accepted for this course.
UTME subject combination
English Language, Mathematics, Physics and any one of Chemistry, Biology, Computer Studies or Data Processing.
The UTME combination and the O’Level credits solve different parts of eligibility. Meeting one does not cancel a problem with the other. Confirm both before a change of institution or course.
Direct Entry, HND or higher-entry route
NCE Credit/Merit in Mathematics and another Science subject, or very good JUPEB passes in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry.
Higher-entry qualifications are course-specific. An ND, HND, NCE, JUPEB or A-Level result that is accepted for one programme should not be assumed to qualify you for another programme with a similar name.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Check whether Further Mathematics is compulsory at O’Level or only an accepted additional subject.
- Computer Studies can be useful but does not automatically replace Mathematics or Physics where those are compulsory.
- Direct Entry applicants should verify the exact related diploma or A-Level subjects accepted for the course.
Before paying for an application
- Match every compulsory O’Level subject against the result you will upload.
- Confirm the UTME or Direct Entry route for the current session.
- Check whether the institution must be your first choice before screening.
- Confirm that the programme is currently accepting applications; a permanent course page does not mean the form is open today.
- Use only the institution’s official payment and application portal.
Source note: UNILAG's detailed 2025/2026 admission-requirements document publishes this course-specific O'Level, UTME and Direct Entry pattern. For the current 2026/2027 admission cycle, applicants must also follow UNILAG's current screening notice and portal conditions; cycle-specific scores, age, one-sitting rules and deadlines can change independently of the academic subject requirement.
Official verification
LAG Institutes uses the official institution source for the academic requirement and keeps short-term admission notices separate. If the institution publishes a newer requirement, the newer official instruction takes priority.

How to use this requirement in the current admission cycle
UNILAG separates the academic subject requirement from the current screening exercise. The detailed departmental requirement tells you whether your O'Level, UTME subjects and Direct Entry qualification fit the course; the current screening notice tells you whether you can enter the present admission exercise. For 2026/2027, UNILAG's screening notice requires first-choice status, a UTME score of at least 200, five relevant O'Level credits at one sitting including English Language and Mathematics, the required result upload and the current age condition. Those cycle rules do not replace the department-specific subject combination shown above.
Before a change of course, compare your actual result line by line with the compulsory subjects. Do not assume a higher UTME score repairs a missing O'Level subject, and do not assume an ND, HND, NCE or JUPEB qualification accepted by one department is accepted by another. Where the Direct Entry paragraph is broad, use the current JAMB brochure and the institution's screening portal before submitting credentials.
