LASU Chemistry Education Requirements: Current Route, O’Level & Screening

Source-checkedLast verified September 5, 2026Official source ↗

Chemistry Education at Lagos State University (LASU) is a verified education route, but applicants should pay attention to how the programme is currently named. LASU’s Department of Science and Technology Education identifies Chemistry Education as one of its six units, while the university’s current Foundation programme list presents the route as Science and Technology Education (Chemistry Option). Both point to the same broad academic area, but the exact title shown on JAMB or LASU’s admission interface should be followed when applying.

LASU Chemistry Education O’Level requirement

The course record previously synced from LASU’s official requirements checker lists English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry and Biology, together with an accepted science-related fifth subject such as Physics or Agricultural Science. Applicants should compare their actual WAEC, NECO or equivalent result with LASU’s current checker before screening.

The important point is that Chemistry is not optional simply because the programme sits in the Faculty of Education. Chemistry Education combines subject knowledge with professional teacher preparation, so a weak science background cannot be replaced by unrelated credits. Five credits are useful only when they include the subjects the programme actually requires.

Programme naming: Chemistry Education vs Chemistry Option

LASU’s Department of Science and Technology Education currently describes its units as Biology Education, Chemistry Education, Computer Science Education, Educational Technology, Mathematics Education and Physics Education. However, LASU’s current Foundation progression list uses the wording Science and Technology Education (Chemistry Option).

This is not a reason to assume the course has disappeared. It is a reason to use the exact title displayed on the current admission form. If JAMB or LASU presents the programme under Science and Technology Education with a Chemistry option, select that official route rather than forcing an older label into the application.

Verify the UTME subjects directly

The UTME field captured during the earlier course sync contained an incomplete scraper fragment rather than a usable combination. This guide therefore does not publish a reconstructed subject list. LASU’s live course-requirements checker should be used before registering for UTME, changing course or changing institution.

Do not borrow the UTME combination for pure Chemistry. Chemistry and Chemistry Education are related but different programmes, and education routes can have their own subject rules.

Current LASU 2026/2027 screening rules

LASU’s official 2026/2027 Admission Screening Portal currently states that UTME candidates need at least 195, must choose LASU as their first-choice institution, must upload their O’Level result to JAMB CAPS, and must use a valid JAMB registration number.

The 195 figure is the university-wide minimum for the screening exercise, not a guaranteed Chemistry Education admission score. Programme eligibility, competition, screening outcome and available places still determine the final result.

Direct Entry applicants

LASU’s current screening portal includes Direct Entry applicants with relevant OND, NCE, HND, A-Level or equivalent qualifications. Candidates need valid JAMB Direct Entry registration and must follow LASU’s credential-submission instructions.

For an education programme, an NCE in a relevant science teaching subject may be especially relevant, but applicants should not assume automatic acceptance. Verify the current qualification, subject pairing and minimum grade for the Chemistry Education route before relying on Direct Entry.

What Chemistry Education is designed to do

Chemistry Education combines the study of chemistry with the methods used to teach science effectively. A student should expect chemistry content alongside education courses, teaching methods, assessment, curriculum work and supervised teaching practice. The programme therefore differs from a pure B.Sc. Chemistry degree, which is centred more heavily on chemistry as a scientific discipline.

This route may suit students who enjoy Chemistry and also like explaining ideas, working with learners or pursuing careers connected to science education, training, curriculum and educational services. Employment requirements for specific teaching roles should still be checked separately from university admission requirements.

Common application mistakes

Official verification

LASU’s Department of Science and Technology Education explicitly lists Chemistry Education among its six units and states that the department admits undergraduate students. LASU’s current Foundation list also includes the Chemistry route under Science and Technology Education.

Bottom line: Chemistry Education is a genuine LASU route, but applicants should verify the current programme title as well as the subject requirements. Correct O’Level subjects, the live UTME combination and current screening eligibility all need to agree before an application is considered safe.

How to use this requirement in the current admission cycle

LASU's course checker gives the programme-specific O'Level and UTME subject pattern, while the current screening portal controls the live admission exercise. For 2026/2027 the screening portal requires LASU as first choice, a minimum UTME score of 195 for UTME candidates, the O'Level result on JAMB CAPS and the appropriate UTME/Direct Entry category. Treat the course requirement and the screening rule as two separate checks: you need both.

Before a change of course, compare your actual result line by line with the compulsory subjects. Do not assume a higher UTME score repairs a missing O'Level subject, and do not assume an ND, HND, NCE or JUPEB qualification accepted by one department is accepted by another. Where the Direct Entry paragraph is broad, use the current JAMB brochure and the institution's screening portal before submitting credentials.
