LASU Data Science: Undergraduate Route Check, Requirements & Screening

Source-checkedLast verified September 5, 2026Official source ↗

Data Science at Lagos State University (LASU) should be verified carefully before an applicant treats it as a currently open standalone undergraduate degree. LAG Institutes has a Data Science course record created from LASU’s official course-requirements checker, including an O’Level subject pattern. But LASU’s present Foundation progression list does not include Data Science, and the current Faculty of Computing and Information Technology webpage publicly displays Computer Science as its visible department. LASU separately offers a Certificate Course: Data Science through ODLRI, so applicants must distinguish that certificate from any bachelor’s-degree route.

What the stored LASU requirement says

The synced course record lists English Language, Mathematics and Physics, with additional accepted subjects such as Chemistry, Further Mathematics, Computer Studies or another Science subject. That pattern fits the quantitative character of Data Science, but it should not be used as proof that LASU is currently admitting UTME candidates into a standalone Data Science bachelor’s programme.

Programme availability and subject eligibility are two separate questions. A candidate can have the correct academic background for a field while the specific degree title is not open in a particular cycle. Check availability first, then check the subjects.

LASU also offers a Data Science certificate

LASU’s Open and Distance Learning & Research Institute currently advertises a Certificate Course: Data Science. The published course covers programming, statistical analysis, data management, data-based models and related skills. Its entry route is for holders of OND, HND, bachelor’s degrees or equivalent qualifications, as well as mature candidates with relevant experience.

That certificate is useful evidence that LASU teaches Data Science, but it is not evidence by itself of a JAMB-entry undergraduate B.Sc. Data Science programme. Applicants looking for a first degree should confirm the exact degree title in the current undergraduate admission interface.

UTME subjects must be checked live

The UTME field saved during the original course sync was incomplete, so this guide does not invent the missing combination. If Data Science is available as a current undergraduate choice, verify the exact subjects through LASU’s official course-requirements checker before JAMB registration or a change of course.

Do not automatically use the Computer Science combination. Data Science overlaps with computing, statistics and mathematics, but related programmes can still have different admission requirements.

Current LASU 2026/2027 screening rules

LASU’s official 2026/2027 Admission Screening Portal currently states that UTME candidates need at least 195, must choose LASU as their first-choice institution, must upload O’Level results to JAMB CAPS, and must use a valid JAMB registration number.

These rules apply to the university’s current undergraduate screening process, but they do not confirm that every historically listed course is open. A 195 score also should not be described as a Data Science departmental cut-off.

Direct Entry applicants

LASU’s current screening system recognises Direct Entry candidates with relevant OND, NCE, HND, A-Level or equivalent qualifications. If a standalone Data Science undergraduate route is available, applicants should confirm the accepted qualification, grade and entry level directly from LASU.

Do not use the ODLRI certificate eligibility rules as a replacement for undergraduate Direct Entry requirements. Certificate admission and degree admission are separate processes.

What Data Science involves

Data Science combines programming, statistics, mathematics and computational methods to extract useful patterns and conclusions from data. LASU’s Data Science certificate describes learning outcomes that include programming ability, statistical analysis, data management and building and assessing data-based models. LASU Computer Science staff profiles also show active research in Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and medical applications.

Those sources show that Data Science expertise exists at LASU. They do not, however, prove that a standalone undergraduate Data Science degree is presently admitting students. That distinction is important for an applicant making a JAMB choice.

Data Science vs Computer Science

Computer Science is broader and deals with algorithms, software, systems, computation and many areas of computing. Data Science is more directly focused on obtaining, managing, analysing and modelling data. A student interested in statistics, machine learning and evidence from large datasets may lean toward Data Science, while someone seeking broader computing foundations may prefer Computer Science. The available LASU degree routes should be checked before making that comparison final.

Official verification

LASU’s current Faculty of Computing and Information Technology page publicly shows Computer Science as its visible department. LASU’s ODLRI separately advertises a Data Science certificate. Because current public sources do not independently confirm a standalone B.Sc. Data Science route, this page treats undergraduate availability as something applicants must verify live rather than as an unquestioned fact.

Bottom line: LASU clearly teaches Data Science through current certificate provision and has academic expertise in the field, but the present public undergraduate sources do not independently establish a standalone Data Science degree. Verify the live degree route before making an admission decision.

How to use this requirement in the current admission cycle

LASU's course checker gives the programme-specific O'Level and UTME subject pattern, while the current screening portal controls the live admission exercise. For 2026/2027 the screening portal requires LASU as first choice, a minimum UTME score of 195 for UTME candidates, the O'Level result on JAMB CAPS and the appropriate UTME/Direct Entry category. Treat the course requirement and the screening rule as two separate checks: you need both.

Before a change of course, compare your actual result line by line with the compulsory subjects. Do not assume a higher UTME score repairs a missing O'Level subject, and do not assume an ND, HND, NCE or JUPEB qualification accepted by one department is accepted by another. Where the Direct Entry paragraph is broad, use the current JAMB brochure and the institution's screening portal before submitting credentials.
