LASU Dentistry (BDS) Requirements: O’Level, Screening & Direct Entry
Dentistry at Lagos State University (LASU) is a clearly established professional degree. LASU’s Faculty of Dentistry states that it was established in 2008 to train dental surgeons and that its Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) programme has secured full accreditation from both the National Universities Commission and the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria. That makes this page different from a generic course listing: there is direct current faculty evidence for the professional programme.
LASU Dentistry O’Level requirement
The current course record synced from LASU’s official requirements checker lists English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. These five subjects form the standard science foundation expected for a clinical dental programme, and applicants should treat each one as important rather than relying on a general five-credit statement.
An earlier official LASU Foundation admission document also specified these five subjects for Dentistry and required them in one sitting. Because that publication was for an older admission cycle, applicants should use the current LASU checker to confirm whether the one-sitting condition remains unchanged for 2026/2027 rather than treating an old notice as a permanent rule.
Verify the current UTME combination
The UTME text stored during the earlier site sync was incomplete and therefore should not be shown as a valid subject combination. For a competitive professional course such as Dentistry, applicants should verify the current UTME subjects directly from LASU’s official course-requirements checker and the current JAMB brochure before registration or any change of course.
Do not assume that Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing and other health programmes use identical rules simply because they share several core sciences. Verify Dentistry under its own programme entry.
LASU 2026/2027 screening rules
LASU’s official 2026/2027 Admission Screening Portal currently requires UTME candidates to score at least 195, select LASU as their first-choice institution, upload their O’Level result to JAMB CAPS, and use a valid JAMB registration number.
The 195 score is only the university’s minimum for the screening process. It should never be described as a guaranteed Dentistry cut-off. Dentistry is a professional programme with limited clinical training capacity, so admission can be considerably more competitive than the university-wide minimum suggests.
Direct Entry applicants
LASU’s screening portal provides a Direct Entry route for candidates with relevant post-secondary qualifications. However, professional health programmes can impose stricter qualification and subject conditions than general university programmes. A candidate with an OND, HND, A-Level or other qualification should confirm specifically whether that credential is accepted for Dentistry and at what entry level.
Do not assume that a health-science qualification automatically gives advanced entry into BDS. Applicants should verify both JAMB Direct Entry eligibility and the current Faculty or university requirement before submitting credentials.
What LASU Dentistry trains students to do
LASU’s Faculty of Dentistry states that its goal is to train dental surgeons with the knowledge and practical skills required for oral-health care. The Faculty currently identifies five departments: Child Dental Health, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Oral Pathology and Oral Medicine, Preventive Dentistry and Restorative Dentistry.
That structure gives applicants a realistic picture of the field. Dentistry combines biomedical science, clinical training, patient care, oral disease prevention, diagnosis and treatment. It requires manual precision, communication with patients, professional ethics and the ability to apply science in clinical settings. It is not simply a shorter version of Medicine.
Why accreditation matters
For professional degrees, programme recognition is especially important. LASU’s Faculty of Dentistry publicly states that its BDS programme has full accreditation from the National Universities Commission and the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria. Applicants should still watch for any newer accreditation notice, but this current faculty statement provides much stronger evidence than an unsourced third-party course list.
Common application mistakes
- Missing one of Physics, Chemistry or Biology and assuming another science subject can replace it.
- Using an old UTME combination instead of the current LASU/JAMB requirement.
- Treating the university’s 195 screening minimum as a Dentistry cut-off.
- Ignoring a possible one-sitting requirement without checking the current cycle.
- Assuming a health-related diploma automatically qualifies for Direct Entry.
- Failing to upload the intended O’Level result to JAMB CAPS.
Official verification
LASU’s Faculty of Dentistry publicly confirms the BDS programme, its professional training mandate and its accreditation status. The current admission portal and course-requirements checker should be used for the final 2026/2027 subject and screening decisions.

Bottom line: Dentistry is a verified LASU professional degree with direct faculty and accreditation evidence. Applicants still need to confirm the exact current subject rules and should not mistake the general screening minimum for a guaranteed BDS admission threshold.
How to use this requirement in the current admission cycle
LASU's course checker gives the programme-specific O'Level and UTME subject pattern, while the current screening portal controls the live admission exercise. For 2026/2027 the screening portal requires LASU as first choice, a minimum UTME score of 195 for UTME candidates, the O'Level result on JAMB CAPS and the appropriate UTME/Direct Entry category. Treat the course requirement and the screening rule as two separate checks: you need both.
Before a change of course, compare your actual result line by line with the compulsory subjects. Do not assume a higher UTME score repairs a missing O'Level subject, and do not assume an ND, HND, NCE or JUPEB qualification accepted by one department is accepted by another. Where the Direct Entry paragraph is broad, use the current JAMB brochure and the institution's screening portal before submitting credentials.
